In the middle of this month we welcomed Jessica Conway to Dharavi, where she will be working closely with our Educational Programs Director, Jonny Clarke, on our English Teacher Training program. This three week course, started on the 25th April and aims to prepare teachers to deliver our English curriculum to people living and working in Dharavi.

Last week Reality Gives staff, volunteers and supporters joined forces with an incredible team of India First employees, and 8ft ‘Doreamon’ and ‘Chota Bheem’ mascots (popular children’s cartoon characters), to deliver Royal City School’s first ever annual sports day.
With races for children from Kindergarten to Standard II and even the mums and dads competing, it proved to be an incredible experience for all involved. Reflecting on the day Letizia De Martino, Reality Gives Executive Director shared, “In our vision we say that we want to build a world where underprivileged communities have equal access to opportunities and resources. I think today we did it! Our children got an Annual Sports Day as any child should deserve to have”.

This previous Saturday people across the world came together
to mark International Women’s Day and here in Dharavi it was no different.
At the Community Centre our Youth Empowerment Program
students presented speeches, posters and plays about influential women (ranging
from hockey players to astronauts and politicians), on the football field the
Dharavi Girls Football Program
got together to send a message out to the world and
the Reception Centre hosted an exhibition of photographs taken by five women
from Dharavi, whom were unequivocally, the stars of the day.

One of the first connection projects of Reality Gives was Masoom,a not-for-profit organisation that aims to establish quality education in night-schools in Mumbai. Last Saturday they opened a new Resources Centre which was supported by Reality Gives. Chris and Summer visited the opening to inaugurate the centre and to discuss future plans.
Given the inadequacies in the Night School infrastructure, there are several children in the Night School who are not able to fulfil their aspirations to move up in life. They have the desire to pick up and strengthen their skill sets, but the Night Schools are not equipped to meet their aspirations. Masoom is a not-for-profit organisation with a passion for establishing quality education in Night Schools. In order to achieve this, Masoom partners with Night Schools to facilitate the “Night School Transformation Programme”. The Transformation Programme is specifically tailored to meet the needs of the Night School and the individual students.
