ABOUT US
Our Journey
In 2006, Reality Tours and Travel, an ethical tourism company, launched Educational Slum Tours of Dharavi, one of Asia’s largest slums. The goal was to show people the positive side of this community and reinvest profits from the tour into its development. After discussing Dharavi’s needs with its families, in 2007 Reality Tours set up a Community Centre to provide English and computer classes, using tour revenues. As Reality Tours grew, the founders decided to expand on their social work. In August 2009, the NGO Reality Gives was born to provide access to quality education to children and youth in Dharavi and similar communities in India.
English Program
The Program provides Level 0 to 3 English Classes (Basic to Intermediate), Computer classes, and Special Activities such as Group Discussions, Movie Screenings, and development workshops by sector experts. It is designed to equip the students with the abilities they need to follow paths in life which they were previously excluded from. In our English class students learn how to speak, listen, read, and write in an English that they will use in daily life, for work and casual conversations. The computer part of the program teaches them how to use MS Office and the internet in order to access opportunities and perform well at different jobs. Additionally, the students can avail of a series of Career Awareness classes, to help them assess where they are and their next steps.
