‘It sounds strange but honestly I feel like I’m in heaven when the children compliment me,’ says Sujatha, who has been a teacher at the Royal City School since 2012. ‘They are so happy to be here and to learn.’ Seeing her students smiling is just one of the reasons why Sujatha enjoys her job.
‘I really like being a teacher at this school because of the training we receive. Twice a year we get the chance to learn about new teaching strategies and how to manage the classroom. The school is here for us, whatever we need.’
Sujatha takes great pride in her skills as a teacher. ‘What I love about my job is giving the children the freedom to learn in an active way, rather than asking them to read out of textbooks.’ In fact, the teaching staff at Royal City School even gave the children the chance to write their own rules for the classroom. ‘It worked really well,’ Sujatha explains, ‘the kids here want to learn and they’re very good. They came up with things like raising your hand to ask a question and it has so much more impact when they think of it themselves.’
‘I am very passionate about this school,’ Sujatha says, ‘because of everything it gives the children, but also because it has given us Dharavi ladies a platform to show off our talents all over the world.’

Meet Sharda, a student on the Reality Gives Youth Program.
Originally from Karnataka, Sharda moved to Mumbai 15 years ago and lives in the heart of Dharavi with her husband and sons. “I come from a village,” says Sharda, “things are different in Mumbai. City life moves so quickly. It’s hard to keep up when people around you are speaking English. I needed to find a way to understand what was going on.”
“A friend recommended this English class to me,” she explains, “I love learning English – especially in class where we get to read aloud and do drama – that’s probably the most fun part.”
For Sharda, learning English was about more than just getting to know the city around her. “I have two boys at home and their English was much better than mine. I wanted to communicate with them more – now they practice with me so we can all improve together.”
The confidence and skills Sharda is building on the Youth Program have propelled her towards a new career. “I dream of being a teacher”, she says. “I need good English to achieve it. My family have been a great support to me. My sons and husband are proud that I am learning a new skill and that I have plans to build a career of my own. I am looking forward to learning more English and reaching my goal.”
