Story & Commitments

OUR JOURNEY

From Tours to Impact

In 2006, Reality Tours & Travel, founded by Chris Way and Krishna Pujari, launched Educational Slum Tours of Dharavi, one of Asia’s largest slums, to highlight its strengths, dispel negative stereotypes, and reinvest 80% of post-tax tour profits to support residents. After consulting local families, they opened a Community Centre in 2007, offering English classes. To deepen their commitment they founded a charity – Reality Gives – in 2009. Since then, we have provided quality learning to students in Dharavi and similar communities across India.

COMMITMENTS

Our Vision & Mission

Our Vision is a world where all communities have equitable access to opportunities and resources.

Our Mission is to  provide young people from underprivileged communities in India with quality education to enable them to maximise their potential.

COMMITMENTS

Our Core Values

Our core values guide how we work, stay true to our mission, and create a positive impact.
They help us make the right decisions, especially in challenging times.

We believe there is always something new to learn and strive to continuously foster and support personal and professional growth.

We believe strength lies in collaboration. We build trust so everyone feels comfortable sharing knowledge and skills and can ask for help at any time.

We believe integrity is at the core of everything we do. We hold ourselves accountable for the promises we make to our beneficiaries and stakeholders. We do the right thing, even when no one is watching.

We believe in setting high standards for ourselves and consistently maintaining them. We remain engaged, enthusiastic, and motivated in all that we do.

We believe diversity enriches us. We uphold our shared values and embrace differences as unique opportunities for growth.

We believe in showing kindness and compassion to our colleagues, students, and community. We give each other the benefit of the doubt and always want the best for one another.

When we first started, I never imagined Reality Gives would grow into what it is today. Yet, our goal remains the same—to listen and respond to the educational needs of every community we serve.

The Reality Gives Story

First Community Centre
Dharavi’s families told Reality Tours that education was their priority. In response, they opened a Community Centre, offering English classes.
Reality Gives is Born
Reality Tours launched computer classes, a cricket program, and supported a preschool. To deepen its commitment, Reality Gives was founded.
Launching Youth Program
Many youths in Dharavi lacked access to education. We launched a holistic Youth Program, combining English, computer, and life skills classes.
Girls' Football Begins
We launched the Girls' Football Program to encourage young girls to play sports. It fostered teamwork, leadership, and confidence while providing a space for fun.
School Program Starts
A low-income school in Dharavi asked for support. We began providing holistic, English-medium education starting from preschool and going up to Grade 4 by 2017.
Award for Impact
Reality Tours won the WTTC Tourism for Tomorrow Award, recognising its community impact—made possible through Reality Gives’ education programs in Dharavi.
Delhi Centre Opens
We opened our first Community Centre in Sanjay Colony, a low-income neighbourhood in Delhi, where Reality Tours started Educational Slum Tours.
Teacher Training Grows
After a 2016 pilot, we launched our second Teacher Training Program. Delta-certified experts trained high-potential community members as English teachers.
Adapting to COVID-19
We ensured our students could continue learning by shifting programs online. We also played a key role in a 100,000+ people vaccination drive in Dharavi up to 2021.
Reaching Rural India
Seeing the struggles of rural communities during COVID-19, Reality Gives opened its first rural Community Centre in Naujheel, near Mathura.
Employability Program Launch
We revamped the Youth Program to strengthen its employability focus with expert-led career workshops, corporate visits, and industry exposure.
